Exchanging business cards is key in doing business because this exchange opens up the world of possibilities for suppliers, agencies, clients and everyone involved in the business. But you don’t just hand out business cards like mad to everyone. There is an etiquette people do subscribe to in this business ritual. Here are some do’s and don’ts you may want to consider before distributing your lovely custom business cards:
  • Do
  1. Do accompany your business card with a firm handshake. Give your card out. And then extend your hand out, hold the hand with a firm grip and give it a single strong shake.
  2. Do smile, a genuine smile as you hand out your business card.
  3. Should you be giving your business card to a Japanese businessman, keep in mind the following:
                 * Do stand up when giving and receiving business cards.
                 * Do present your card with the print facing forward and towards your Japanese host.
                 * Do lean forward to bow, while offering the business card.
                 * Do receive the Japanese man’s card with both hands.
                 * Do scrutinize the card and read the Japanese man’s name and title carefully. It is said to be good manners to furrow your   eyebrows in interest.
  • Don’t
  1. Don’t give away a crumpled business card because the business card represents yourself and the company you work for.
  2. Don’t throw away the business card, but rather put it inside your wallet or your business card holders.
  3. Don’t forget to ask for your colleagues’ business card as well.
